2027: Opposition parties begin work to unite against APC

Opposition parties in Nigeria have taken another step towards forming a broader political coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, with their newly established leadership committee beginning work on how to turn the agreement reached at their August summit into action.

The Central Leadership Committee set up at the August 31 Summit of Opposition Parties held its inaugural meeting on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.

In a statement signed Thursday in Abuja, by the leader of the G-100, Salihu Moh. Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties, the committee said it had agreed on operational principles aimed at ensuring equality and mutual respect among the parties involved.

One of the decisions reached was that the chairmanship of coalition meetings would rotate among the participating parties in alphabetical order.

The committee said the arrangement was intended to reflect the principle of equality on which the coalition was founded.

The meeting also reviewed the communiqué issued after the August summit and began the process of implementing its resolutions.

According to the statement, particular attention was given to setting up the Publicity Committee, Legal Committee and five Working Groups created by the summit.

All participating parties were directed to submit the names of their nominees to the coalition’s secretariat by the close of work on Friday, September 18.

The committees and working groups are expected to begin operations during the week of September 21 to 27.

The opposition leaders also agreed to expand the coalition to accommodate other opposition parties that have expressed interest in joining the initiative.

The committee is scheduled to meet again on Wednesday, September 23, and said it would continue meeting regularly as it works towards uniting opposition parties and presenting a common front in the 2027 elections.
