2027 elections: Gombe students launch Jagaban/Inuwa mandate initiative
The Jagaban/Inuwa Students’ Mandate 2027, Gombe state chapter on Thursday launched its Campus Ambassadors initiative across tertiary institutions in the state, with a pledge to mobilise students and promote discussions on education, governance and youth development ahead of the 2027 elections.
The group said the initiative would establish a coordinated network of student ambassadors who would engage their colleagues on government policies, education programmes and documented achievements of the administrations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
Speaking at the launch, the convener, Comrade Kasim Abubakar said that the initiative would provide a platform for students to participate in discussions about education, governance and the future of young people in the state.
He said the group’s activities would focus on documented developments in education sector, particularly interventions relating to school infrastructure, teacher recruitment, access to education, examination performance, girl-child education, out-of-school children and tertiary education.
“We are launching a platform that would engage students on the developments taking place in the education sector. Our Campus Ambassadors would take this conversation to campuses across Gombe, engage their fellow students and encourage informed discussions about programmes and interventions affecting their education and future,” he said.
He said the initiative is also to promote the administrations of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Gombe state governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, while backing Dr Jamilu Isyaku Gwamna, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 Gombe governorship election.
According to the student group, the federal government’s education interventions, particularly the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), technical and vocational education and training (TVET), tertiary infrastructure and research funding, informed its support for the administration.
He added that, “As of August 2026, over 1.6 million applications have been processed, with more than N322 billion disbursed to students across universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and vocational schools.
“An ambitious plan to train over one million youths across 1,600 centres, with free tuition, monthly stipends, and starter packs in trades such as electrical work, welding, and digital skills.
“The administration successfully reached a comprehensive agreement with ASUU, ending a crisis that had lingered for 16 years and leading to improved salaries, allowances, pensions, research funding, and working conditions for university staff.
According to the group, education has remained one of the major priorities of the Inuwa Yahaya administration since it assumed office in 2019.
“Governor Inuwa Yahaya declared a state of emergency in the education sector in 2019, making education a major priority of his administration with the construction and renovation of more than 1,600 classrooms at inception, the recruitment of more than 1,000 qualified teachers to address manpower shortages, including the recruitment of 1,000 secondary-school teachers announced in 2023.
“The state government reported that the proportion of students obtaining at least five credits, including English and Mathematics in national examinations increased from 22 per cent in 2019 to 76 per cent in 2024.
The newly inaugurated Campus Ambassadors were charged with the responsibility of grassroots mobilisation, voter education and engaging students on education-related programmes and developments at both federal and state levels,” it said.
