10-year-old girl allegedly m8rdered in South Africa, family member arrested
Police have launched investigation into the m8rder of a 10-year-old girl, Octavia Swartz in Kraaifontein, the northern part of Capetown, South Africa.
TheGrade 4 learner from JoostenbergPrimary School was reported missing on Sunday afternoon after going for a run with her 14-year-old male cousin.
Her body was discovered by farmers on Monday, September 14, 2026.
The 14-year-old boy was arrested in Monday in connection with the m8rder but he has been returned to the care of his parents after the matter was not enrolled at the Blue Downs Magistrates Court.
The docket has been returned to police for further investigation, and it is unclear whether the boy is still a suspect.
Meanwhile, the Kraaifontein Community Policing Forum (CPF) is urging residents to work with detectives and avoid spreading unverified information.
“She was a star student. She excelled very nicely in school. She was a grade four pupil at Joostenwerg Primary School,” CPF chairperson Arifa Osman said.
“We also want to appeal to anyone who may have relevant information to provide it directly to the investigating authorities rather than sharing (it) on social media. You can also remain anonymous when doing so.”
Osman said the farm community, where Swartz lived, was reeling.
“The community and we as CPF of Kraaifontein are deeply saddened and shocked by the d3ath of this young girl,” he said.
“Her whole life was still ahead of her. There is a strong sense of grief, anger and concern within the community.”
Gavin Riddles, the national chair of the Community Law and Order Foundation, said Octavia’s d3ath was particularly shocking because she was allegedly k!lled by a relative.
“For a 10-year-old child, who is still a baby, she’s still a baby! She’s supposed to be protected, protected by law, protected by families, protected by parents,” Riddles said.
He said the responsibility to protect children also extended to authorities.
“And to be m8rdered by an own family member, a relative that you grew up with, that you’re used to, that had a responsibility to also care for you as a female, that was totally shocking for me,” he added.
