Wuse Zone 3: Another building collapses in Abuja

A three-storey building on Monday night collapsed at Wuse Zone 3 in the Wuse area of Abuja, with the circumstances surrounding the incident and possible casualties yet to be officially established.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Authorities (FCTA) had reportedly marked the building and asked occupants to vacate earlier same day.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official confirmation from the relevant emergency management authorities on whether anyone was trapped inside the building, injured or killed.

The cause of the collapse was also not immediately known, while it remained unclear whether the structure was occupied or still under construction when it came down.

The incident reportedly occurred in the vicinity of Zone 3, one of the established districts in Abuja’s Wuse area.

Initial reports from the scene indicated that emergency responders were expected to assess the situation and determine whether search and rescue operations would be required.

However, no verified casualty figure had been released at the time of publication.

The absence of an official casualty figure means reports circulating on social media about possible deaths or people trapped under the rubble should be treated with caution until confirmed by emergency agencies.

Recent collapses raise concern in Abuja

The incident is the latest in a series of building collapses recorded in Abuja in recent months.

On April 3, 2026 a two-storey building under construction collapsed in the Jikwoyi area of the Federal Capital Territory while construction workers were on site.

The FCT Emergency Management Department said 17 workers were on the upper floor when the structure gave way, with several workers sustaining injuries and one worker trapped at ground level later rescued. Different reports put the number of injured workers at between six and seven.

Following the Jikwoyi incident, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ordered the arrest of the developer and directed that the land be seized after authorities determined that the structure had been erected without the necessary approval from the Department of Development Control.

Wike said the developer had continued construction despite stop-work notices issued by the authorities.

Barely six weeks later, Abuja recorded a more deadly collapse when a three-storey building under construction behind Gudu Market in the Durumi 3 area collapsed on May 16, 2026.

At least five people were confirmed dead in that incident, while several others were rescued from the rubble. The victims were largely believed to be construction workers at the site.

The May collapse prompted another intervention by the FCT Administration, with Wike ordering a full investigation, sealing the premises and directing the arrest of the site engineer while the developer was also targeted for arrest.

The recurrence of such incidents has continued to raise questions about compliance with building regulations, quality control, professional supervision and the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms within the nation’s capital.

The latest incident at Wuse Zone 3, is therefore likely to attract close attention from the FCT Administration and emergency response agencies, particularly as officials continue efforts to strengthen enforcement following previous collapses.
