Trump Says Talks Will Continue, Iran Says Not So Fast: Inside the Latest Peace Push

US President Donald Trump said Washington has agreed to resume talks with Iran at Tehran’s request but declared the ceasefire between the two countries is “over.”

The diplomatic outlook between the United States and Iran remains uncertain after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington had agreed to resume talks with Tehran, even as he declared that the ceasefire between the two countries was “over.”

The developments come as Qatari mediators arrived in Tehran to restart diplomatic efforts after two days of deadly strikes between the US and Iran, while Iranian officials insisted no new negotiations had been scheduled.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had requested the resumption of negotiations and that the United States had accepted.

“THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN HAS ASKED US TO CONTINUE ‘TALKS.’ WE HAVE AGREED TO DO SO, BUT THE UNITED STATES HAS STATED TO THEM, IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS, THAT THE CEASE FIRE IS OVER! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER. PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP.”

Trump later reiterated that the US had agreed to continue talks after Tehran requested negotiations, while emphasizing that the ceasefire between the two nations was no longer in effect.

Despite Trump’s remarks, Iran denied reports that a new round of negotiations with the United States would take place next week.

According to Fars News, citing a source close to Iran’s negotiating team, reports claiming preparations had been finalized for talks in Islamabad and that technical discussions would continue next week were “false and have no basis in reality.”

The source added that any future diplomatic developments would be announced only through Iran’s official channels.

The denial came after Axios reported that negotiations could resume in Switzerland as early as next week.

According to CBS News, US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have been in contact with Qatari officials this week as part of diplomatic efforts related to Iran.

The discussions come as Qatar, Pakistan and other mediators seek to reduce tensions following the recent escalation between Washington and Tehran, although it remains unclear how much progress has been achieved.

Qatari negotiators are now in Tehran in an effort to get diplomacy back on track after two days of deadly strikes between the US and Iran.

Iran’s lead negotiator and Parliament Speaker Mohammad Ghalibaf said Tehran would never surrender and warned that Iran was prepared for full-scale defence if the United States abandoned the memorandum of understanding (MoU).

“At any moment the Americans betray the understanding, we are ready for full-scale defence and will stand firm against them and defend the rights of the Iranian people.”

He added, “Ending the war is a priority for the countries of the world, but everyone should know that this conflict will never end with Iran’s surrender.”

Ghalibaf also called on Muslim nations to “stand up” and unite against the United States and Israel.

The US Treasury Department announced fresh Iran-related sanctions on Friday, targeting Iranian financial facilitator Ali Ansari, who it said oversees a global network of assets benefiting Iran’s leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, and other regime elites.

The Treasury said the measures followed Iran’s resumption of attacks on international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) also issued Iran General License Y, authorizing the wind-down of transactions involving Smart Global Limited.
