Iran has wanted Donald Trump dead for years, and the president says he’s prepared for it. In an interview with the New York Post published Friday, Trump revealed he has already put instructions in place for how the US should respond if Tehran ever manages to assassinate him. His answer was blunt: overwhelming, unprecedented bombing.

“I’ve been on their list for a long time. That’s what we’re dealing with,” Trump said, according to the Post. He described the arrangement almost matter of factly, explaining that he’s told aides that if he’s killed, the US should respond by striking Iran at a scale it has never faced before.

A reporter pressed him on separate reports that Israel had recently flagged fresh intelligence about a plot to kill him. Trump dismissed the idea that anything new was brewing, saying Israeli intelligence hadn’t turned up anything concrete this time. What hasn’t changed, he said, is his position at the top of Tehran’s target list, something he’s simply learned to live with.

Then came a line that landed differently than the rest of the interview. Trump told the Post he hoped people would miss him, a remark that read less like bravado and more like resignation to a threat he doesn’t believe will ever fully go away.
