Lecturers at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology have demanded an explanation as to why their August salaries are yet to be paid by the management of the institution.
A report by PUNCH quoted a cross-section of the teaching staff who spoke with on condition of anonymity on Friday to have accused the management of deliberately withholding their August salaries.
They accused the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Olumuyiwa Odusanya, of taking a unilateral decision to withhold workers’ salaries, alleging that he did not carry the Lagos State Government along.
They also pointed to other state-owned universities, including Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), where workers’ August salaries had reportedly been paid despite similar industrial disputes involving non-academic staff.
One of the affected lecturers questioned why LASUSTECH academic staff should be denied their salaries when they had not joined the strike.
The lecturers are therefore calling for clarification from the university authorities and the Lagos State Government, particularly on whether there was any official directive to delay the payment.
The development has added to concerns among workers at the institution, who want the issue resolved quickly and their outstanding August salaries paid.
The controversy comes amid wider labour-related tensions in some Nigerian universities, as institutions and workers continue to negotiate over employment conditions and other grievances.
