Residents, farmers and traders in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State have expressed optimism over the ongoing rehabilitation of the 9 kilometre road linking Saminaka Resort and Abadawa communities, saying the project will significantly improve transportation, boost agricultural activities and stimulate economic growth after more than three decades of neglect.

The road, which serves as a critical access route for several agrarian communities in the area, has for years remained in a deplorable condition, making movement difficult for motorists, farmers, traders and other residents who rely on it to transport agricultural produce and access social and economic services. For decades, the poor state of the road has posed serious challenges to rural livelihoods, particularly during the rainy season when erosion, deep potholes and muddy sections often rendered the road almost impassable, leaving many communities isolated.

The development has also contributed to high transportation costs, delayed movement of farm produce and increased post harvest losses, thereby reducing farmers’ incomes and limiting commercial activities within the affected communities.

Decades of failed interventions

Residents recalled that previous efforts by successive administrations to rehabilitate the road through various contracts yielded little or no results, as the projects were either abandoned or poorly executed.

According to them, the prolonged neglect of the road had become a major source of concern, with many communities losing economic opportunities because of the poor transport infrastructure.

However, with work now ongoing on a fresh reconstruction project, many residents believe the intervention will finally address one of the area’s most pressing infrastructure deficits.

They expressed confidence that the completed road would improve connectivity among rural communities and facilitate easier movement of people, goods and essential services.

Farmers anticipate higher incomes

Farmers in the communities said the reconstruction would bring relief by providing easier access to markets where they sell grains, maize, sorghum, vegetables and other agricultural produce.

They explained that poor road conditions had forced many transporters to either avoid the route or charge exorbitant fares, making it difficult for farmers to move their harvest to neighbouring towns.

According to them, the improved road will reduce transportation costs, minimise post harvest losses and encourage greater investment in agriculture.

They added that easier access to markets would enable farmers to sell their produce promptly, improve household incomes and strengthen food supply chains within and outside the local government area.

Traders and transport operators also believe the project will encourage commercial activities by attracting more buyers, easing the movement of goods and opening up new economic opportunities for rural dwellers.

Traditional rulers applaud project

The Emir of Lere, Alhaji Suleiman Umar, and the Emir of Saminaka, Alhaji Sani Musa, described the road reconstruction as a welcome development that would positively impact thousands of residents across the benefiting communities.

They noted that reliable road infrastructure remains one of the key drivers of rural development, especially in communities where agriculture serves as the primary source of livelihood.

The traditional rulers said improved road connectivity would not only enhance mobility but also provide easier access to healthcare, education and other essential public services.

They commended the government for responding to the long standing request of the people and expressed hope that the project would be completed as scheduled.

Council chairman speaks

The Executive Chairman of Lere Local Government Area, Jafaru Ahmed, said the reconstruction would address a major infrastructure challenge that had affected socio economic development in the area for many years.

He said the project aligns with efforts to improve rural infrastructure and create an enabling environment for agriculture, commerce and investment.

According to him, improved road access will strengthen the link between farming communities and urban markets, thereby enhancing agricultural productivity and supporting local economic growth.

He added that the road would also improve access to schools, healthcare facilities and other public services, thereby raising the standard of living for residents.

Contractor assures quality delivery

Representatives of the Chinese construction company handling the project assured residents of their commitment to delivering quality work within the agreed timeline.

They stated that the road would be constructed in accordance with approved engineering standards and appealed to residents to cooperate with workers to ensure smooth execution of the project.

The contractors also urged members of the host communities to provide a peaceful environment throughout the construction period, noting that community support remains essential to the successful completion of the project.

Hope for rural transformation

Residents, youths and community leaders believe the road rehabilitation will serve as a catalyst for wider socio economic development in Lere Local Government Area.

They expressed hope that upon completion, the project would improve rural connectivity, attract more investment, strengthen agricultural value chains and enhance the livelihoods of thousands of families who depend on farming and related businesses for survival.

For many residents, the reconstruction represents more than a road project. It is seen as a long awaited intervention capable of unlocking the economic potential of the communities and restoring confidence in public infrastructure after years of neglect.
