Pete Hegseth Military Grooming Policy Explained: Why Beards Became a Pentagon Flashpoint Amid Iran War

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s recent visit to a Navy warship has ignited discussions about military grooming standards after he observed sailors with beards, despite his stricter regulations against facial hair.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit to a US Navy warship has sparked fresh debate over military grooming standards after he reportedly noticed several sailors sporting beards despite his stricter policy aimed at limiting facial hair across the armed forces.

The visit, which took place amid heightened US-Iran tensions, was intended to focus on meeting sailors and assessing operational readiness. Instead, attention shifted to the presence of bearded service members, raising questions about how consistently Hegseth’s grooming rules are being enforced.

According to a CNN report citing defence officials and internal emails, Hegseth left the June visit questioning whether Pentagon leaders were taking his beard policy and other workforce reforms seriously.

Hegseth pushes stricter beard rules

Following the visit, Pentagon officials reportedly held meetings with senior staff, stressing that Hegseth was closely tracking progress on implementing his grooming standards and other personnel reforms.

An internal email circulated among civilian personnel officials in June stated that the defence secretary was personally monitoring changes related to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) reforms and wanted agencies to accelerate implementation timelines.

The episode underscores Hegseth’s focus on military culture and personnel policies even as the US military remains engaged in operations linked to the escalating conflict with Iran and other overseas missions.

Pentagon defends policy

Responding to the controversy, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell told CNN that Hegseth expects all service members to maintain the highest standards of appearance, discipline and fitness.

He said the defence secretary continues to emphasise consistent enforcement of hair, weight and grooming regulations across every rank, adding that commanders would be held accountable for ensuring compliance as the department works to strengthen military readiness and professionalism.

What is Pete Hegseth‘s beard policy?

In September last year, Hegseth introduced stricter regulations governing facial hair and medical exemptions that allow service members to grow beards, reversing policies that had been in place for several years.

Speaking to senior military leaders at the time, Hegseth declared, “No more beardos,” adding that the era of what he described as “rampant and ridiculous shaving profiles” was over.

The updated policy significantly tightened the approval process for medical shaving waivers, allowing beards only in limited circumstances, such as approved medical or religious exemptions.

The latest incident has renewed scrutiny over whether the Pentagon is uniformly enforcing the grooming standards introduced under Hegseth’s leadership.
