Pentagon Drops Iran War Death Toll From 18 to 14, Cutting Out Four Recent Deaths
The Pentagon cut its official Iran war death toll from 18 to 14 in a single day, removing four troops killed this past weekend because their deaths came after the April ceasefire.
The Pentagon’s official count of American troops killed in the Iran war shifted overnight this week, dropping from 18 to 14 after officials removed four service members who died earlier this month.
The change showed up on the Defense Casualty Analysis System, the Pentagon’s public database tracking military deaths. The New York Times was first to report the revised number.
Of the 14 deaths now counted, seven are labeled “hostile” in the Pentagon’s database.
The explanation arrives as members of Congress question how much information the administration is sharing about the war’s toll.
Beyond the disputed numbers, the Pentagon has offered few updates on military strategy since the ceasefire broke down. The department has not held a major briefing on the conflict since early May.
The gap between the president’s public statements and the Pentagon’s own database has added to questions about how the administration is tracking and reporting the war’s human cost.
