Nigeria’s new High Commissioner presents credentials to Canada

Nigeria’s new High Commissioner to Canada, Emeritus Professor Isaac F. Adewole, has presented his Letters of Credence to Canada’s Governor-General, the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, in Ottawa.

The ceremony, which held on September 15, 2026, marked the start of Adewole’s diplomatic engagements in Canada.

During the audience, Adewole conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s greetings and felicitations to Arbour on her assumption of office as Canada’s 31st Governor-General.

The High Commissioner highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Canada, expressing Nigeria’s readiness to expand mutually beneficial cooperation and build on existing ties.

He also underscored Nigeria’s role in promoting democracy, good governance and counter-terrorism in Africa, including through the ECOWAS and African Union frameworks.

Governor-General Arbour described Letters of Credence as an instrument of trust between states and stressed the importance of rules-based international cooperation.

She also called for stronger conditions for peace, prosperity and improved quality of life amid the pressures created by conflict, climate change and the global race for technological innovation.

Adewole pledged to use his tenure to deepen Nigeria-Canada relations and advance cooperation in peace, development, democratic governance and other shared interests.
