Nigerians reflect on 727 days of local refining as Dangote marks PMS production milestone

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has marked 727 days since it officially commenced production of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), a milestone the company says underscores a turning point in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.

In a statement announcing the anniversary, the refinery highlighted the shift from years of import dependence toward a domestic refining capacity now producing petrol, diesel and aviation fuel at scale.

The announcement triggered a wave of reactions on social media platform X, under the hashtag #DangoteRefineryImpact, where users reflected on how Nigeria’s fuel landscape has changed.

A recurring theme was the near-disappearance of the fuel queues that once defined periods of scarcity at filling stations nationwide, with several contributors recalling hours-long waits that had become normalised over the years.

Other commentary centred on value retention, with contributors arguing that Nigeria’s historical challenge was never a shortage of crude oil but a limited capacity to refine it domestically.
