NGO applauds Benue Assembly for rights-based TB bill
A non-governmental organisation, Lawyers Alert, on Friday, has commended the Benue State House of Assembly for initiating the Benue State Tuberculosis (TB) Elimination, Human Rights Protection and Anti-Discrimination Bill, 2026, saying it was “a significant step towards tackling the disease through a rights-based approach.”
The bill, sponsored by the Deputy Chief Whip, Hon. Simon Gabo, representing Mata State Constituency in Ushongo local government area, passed first reading during the plenary on 24 September 2026.
It was subsequently referred to the House Standing Committee on Health for further legislative consideration.
The President of Lawyers Alert, Dr. Rommy Mom, said the legislation would help address human rights barriers that could prevent people from seeking and remaining in TB care.
He also urged lawmakers, government ministries and agencies, traditional and community leaders, healthcare workers, civil society organisations, development partners, and people affected by TB to sustain constructive engagement as the bill progresses through subsequent legislative stages.
He said the development followed sustained consultations and advocacy involving legislators, people affected by TB, survivors, health stakeholders, civil society and human rights organisations.
“The purpose of this bill is to ensure that Benue state has a strong legal framework that supports the elimination of tuberculosis while protecting the dignity and fundamental rights of people affected by TB,” he said.
