Nasarawa unveils activities to mark 30th anniversary

The Nasarawa state government has unveiled a week-long programme of activities to mark the 30th anniversary of the creation of the state.

The  state deputy governor and chairman of the Central Planning Committee for the celebration, Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, disclosed this during a press conference in Lafia on Thursday.

He said the anniversary provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the state’s journey over the past three decades and renew their commitment to building a more united, peaceful and prosperous Nasarawa state.

Akabe noted that the state, created on October 1, 1996, has recorded significant progress in various sectors and that governor Abdullahi Sule approved the celebration to honour individuals and institutions that have contributed to the state’s growth.

While highlighting its achievements and challenges Akabe said the celebration is not merely about marking 30 years on the calendar but about celebrating

the people, cultures, resilience and shared identity of Nasarawa state.

He added that it would also recognise the contributions of founding fathers, past and present governors, public servants, traditional rulers, women, youths and other citizens who have played vital roles in the state’s development.

The deputy governor explained that the anniversary would provide a platform for reflection on progress recorded in education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, human capital development, security, commerce and investment, while creating an opportunity to envision the future of the state.

He announced that activities for the celebration will begin on Friday, September 25, with a special Jumma’at Mosque in Lafia. This will be followed by the commissioning of selected projects on Saturday, September 26, and an inter-denominational church service at St. Williams Cathedral, Lafia, on Sunday, September 27.

He said Prof. Attahiru Jega, expected to speak on “Nasarawa state at30 from foundation to transformation.” while Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, will also deliver a lecture titled “Unity in Diversity: Three Decades of Building a Cohesive Nasarawa State – Issues, Challenges and Prospects.”

The week-long celebration will culminate on October 1 with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration and the 30th anniversary of the creation of Nasarawa State, during which governor Abdullahi Sule is expected to deliver an anniversary address.
