NANS tracks NEDC interventions, raises concerns on abandoned education projects

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has set up an independent committee to track and verify educational intervention projects executed by the North-East Development Commission (NEDC).

NANS said the move became necessary due to the large scale of public investment committed to educational development in the North-East, “and the need to ensure that interventions actually reach intended beneficiaries”.

According to a letter of appointment by the National President of the association, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde, the NANS’s committee on NEDC Educational Intervention Projects Verification and Monitoring would conduct independent verification exercises, track project implementation, engage beneficiary institutions and communities, assess impact, and provide evidence-based reports to guide advocacy and stakeholder engagement.

The committee would be chaired by Comrade Ali Amtai Saidu with Comrade Abubakar Abdulkadir serving as vice chairman while Muhammed Sani Hassan, would serve as secretary.

Other members of the committee include Comrade Ibrahim Usman Maga, Comrade Bukar Abubakar Gana, Comrade Sulaiman Umar Chinade, Comrade Aliyu Sulaiman Aliyu, and Philip Peter Achagwa.

Speaking after his appointment, the chairman of the committee, Comrade Amtai Saidu, expressed concerns over alleged abandonment of some education projects in the zone and inadequate scholarship schemes for students.

He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to look into the matter.
