Meter dispute: At last, Kaduna Electric disconnects Millennium City from national grid

Residents of Millennium City in Kaduna state have appealed to Governor Uba Sani to urgently intervene in the electricity dispute between the community and Kaduna Electric following the disconnection of power supply on Saturday.
The residents, under the aegis of the Ministerial Plot Housing Estate Residents Association (MPHERA), said the disconnection had thrown the entire community into darkness and heightened fears over the security of lives and property, particularly at night.
Chairman of MPHERA, Shafik Muazu Shira, who spoke on behalf of various residents’ associations, said they were not opposed to proper metering but were concerned about the proposed replacement of existing meters, especially as the matter was already before the court.
He urged Kaduna Electric to suspend the exercise pending the determination of the case, questioning the decision to disconnect the entire community over objections to the disputed metering exercise.
Shira also called on Kaduna Electric to comply with recommendations of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), which had earlier inspected meters in the affected estates and identified some requiring replacement or further action.
He said the blackout was affecting hospitals, patients, businesses and more than 500 residents, warning that prolonged darkness could expose the community to criminal activities and worsen insecurity in the area.
The residents therefore appealed to Governor Uba Sani, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and NEMSA to urgently intervene, restore power and ensure that the dispute is resolved through dialogue while respecting the ongoing court process.
