My ancestral home, public utilities, over 500 other houses razed in 2 months, Ukura cries out
An environmental consultant, Architect Patrick Ukura, has said that his ancestral home, public utilities, and other houses have been razed in two months due to communal clashes.
He lamented that the Benue state government had failed in its statutory responsibility of protecting the lives and property of the rural dwellers.
Ukura, who hails from Akpa community in Mbakor, Tarka local government area of the state, alleged that the state government had remained docile while his kinsmen in Akpa-Mbakor were being killed and their property worth millions of Naira destroyed in the past two months.
In a statement released to newsmen Thursday in Abuja, Ukura decried the “inability of the state government to take a decisive approach in bringing the crisis to an end.”
He said the crisis between Akpa and Agasha in Guma local government area has already claimed several innocent lives of the indigenous people of Mbakor.
According to him, while the crisis persists between the two hitherto peaceful communities, the state government has deliberately refused to act.
Ukura also alleged that the state government was making a huge political capital out of the current crisis; hence its “laissez-faire approach towards the communal clash that has claimed the lives of several innocent citizens, particularly those from Tarka local government area.”
He called on the federal government to intervene and save his people from further carnage to protect the sanctity of human lives.
Ukura further stated that efforts by the stakeholders in the area, which include Governor Alia’s Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Terlumun Dwem, and Housing, Roy Ashirga, as well as Tor Lobi, HRH Mfave Anagende, and Tor Jemgbah, HRH Afatyo Ajoko, President General Mzough-u-Tiv, Comdr. A. Agbecha (retd.), among others, also failed to yield fruitful results.
He said, “Why has the Benue state government failed in its primary responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens for this long? More worrisome are the failed attempts by critical stakeholders, including the commissioner, Terlumun Dwem. How can the Benue State Government allow this crisis to persist? My people’s means of livelihood are destroyed daily, yet the government does not care. Why play politics with human lives?”
It was gathered that a crisis broke out on August 5, 2026, between the two communities over an unauthorised burial of a corpse on Akpa-Mbakor ancestral land and has continued unabated, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property.
