Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and broadcaster Alhaji Hamzat have reignited tensions in their once-close relationship, as both men exchanged claims over political credit and loyalty in the buildup to the 2027 general election.

Hamzat, speaking to Accord Party members in Ibadan on Saturday, asserted that he played a pivotal role in bringing Makinde into politics and deserved recognition for the governor’s achievements during his eight-year tenure.

He insisted that Makinde’s successes were tied to his early support.

Makinde, however, countered that while he and Hamzat had known each other before his governorship, disagreements were inevitable.

He urged his supporters not to be swayed by rhetoric but to scrutinize the records and programmes of those seeking office.

“The next governor should not only criticise my administration but identify unfinished projects and mistakes, then provide better solutions for the people,” Makinde said, stressing continuity and accountability.

Hamzat, widely known for his interventionist radio programme Kokoro Alate, said he backed Makinde’s initial bid because he believed the governor would serve the people of Oyo State.

But with political interests now diverging, their alliance appears fractured.
