A 55-year-old motorist narrowly escaped death on Friday after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos, leaving the vehicle severely damaged.

The incident involved a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT and a train travelling towards Agege.

Despite the severity of the collision, the driver reportedly escaped unhurt, with no casualty recorded at the scene.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), working alongside security personnel, swiftly rescued the motorist and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway track, allowing the train to continue its journey.

However, the incident caused significant traffic congestion around the PWD axis, disrupting vehicular movement along the affected corridor.

The wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the cause of the collision.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the authority’s operatives and security personnel for their prompt response, professionalism and effective coordination during the emergency operation.

He said inter-agency collaboration, vigilance and timely intervention were essential to minimising the consequences of transportation emergencies, particularly those involving railway operations and adjoining road infrastructure.

Bakare-Oki also urged motorists to exercise extreme caution when approaching railway crossings and designated train corridors.

He warned against attempting to cross railway tracks when a train was approaching or already in motion, stressing that disregard for railway safety regulations could result in devastating consequences.

The LASTMA boss appealed to motorists and other road users to obey traffic regulations, exercise sound judgment and prioritise safety at all times.

He reiterated that preventable collisions could be avoided through responsible driving, heightened awareness and strict compliance with safety instructions.
