Lagos: 81 Division opens fresh channel for defence-media engagement

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 81 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Adebayo Babalola, has pledged sustained collaboration with the Association of Defence Correspondents of Nigeria (ADCON) to strengthen communication between the military and the defence media.

Babalola made the commitment when the leadership of ADCON paid a courtesy visit to the headquarters of 81 Division in Lagos as part of efforts to establish a stronger professional relationship with the formation.

The delegation, led by ADCON President, Mr Philip Nwosu of The Sun Newspapers, used the visit to formally introduce the association to the GOC, present its members and explore avenues for improved interaction with the Division.

Nwosu said ADCON was committed to promoting professional, responsible and accurate reporting of the activities of the Armed Forces and other security institutions.

He explained that defence journalism required specialised knowledge of military operations, security procedures and national security considerations, stressing the need for journalists to balance the public’s right to information with legitimate operational concerns.

According to him, ADCON was seeking a structured relationship with 81 Division that would enable accredited defence correspondents to obtain reliable information from appropriate military authorities and report security developments more accurately.

Nwosu clarified that the association was not seeking preferential treatment or unrestricted access to sensitive military information, but a professional communication channel that could help reduce misinformation, speculation and inaccurate reports, particularly during security operations.

He said ADCON was also interested in giving adequate attention to the sacrifices of soldiers, humanitarian interventions, civil-military relations, peacebuilding initiatives and other activities of the Armed Forces aimed at safeguarding the nation.

The ADCON president assured the GOC that members of the association would continue to observe professional journalism ethics and respect legitimate security considerations while carrying out their responsibility of informing the public.

Responding, Babalola described the relationship between the military and the media as important to national security, thanking the delegation for visiting the Division.

The GOC said he had interacted with several members of ADCON since assuming command on January 20, adding that the media had an important responsibility in helping Nigerians understand military operations and the sacrifices of personnel.

He urged defence correspondents to give appropriate attention to the achievements of the Armed Forces while reporting challenges and shortcomings with context, fairness and accuracy.

Babalola said the Nigerian Army had recorded successes in different theatres of operation which, in his view, deserved adequate public awareness.

He assured members of ADCON that the Division remained accessible to journalists seeking clarification on issues relating to its activities.

The GOC said regular briefings, professional engagements, familiarisation visits and other interactions would provide opportunities for greater understanding between the military and defence correspondents.

He further pledged the Division’s continued cooperation with ADCON, noting that closer engagement between military authorities and journalists would promote credible information, curb misinformation and improve public understanding of national security operations.
