Lack Of Electricity Makes Population Double In Nigeria – Fayose

Ayodele Fayose, Chairman of the Rural Electrification Agency, has suggested that Nigeria’s electricity crisis is contributing to rapid population growth.

Speaking on the social impact of inadequate power supply, Fayose argued that the absence of electricity forces people indoors earlier in the evening, which in turn increases intimacy among couples.

“When you don’t address the issue of electricity, by 7 o’clock it gets dark, and people start engaging with their wives, so the population doubles,” he said.

“Because there is no electricity, people go to bed early. Their minds are already prepared for it. If this is the only option available, they simply stay at home. But if we address the electricity problem, there will be nightlife.”

Fayose emphasized that improving access to electricity would not only boost economic activity but also reshape social behavior by encouraging nightlife and reducing the tendency for families to retire early.
