Four personnel of the Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun have been detained by the Nigeria Police Force following their alleged involvement in the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as “Emir.”

Clarifying the development in a statement issued Tuesday, Osun Amotekun spokesperson, Yusuf Abass, stated that the four operatives were voluntarily surrendered to the police by Corps Commander Adekunle Omoyele in the interest of transparency, accountability and  thorough investigation.

Abass stated that the four personnel were attached to the former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Nurudeen Alowonle, who faces allegation of masterminding the lethal attack in Ile-Ife.

“The decision was taken to enable the police conduct their investigation and unravel the circumstances surrounding the attacks in Ile-Ife. The operatives were therefore made available to the appropriate security authority as part of the investigative process,” Abass said.

He added that there is a distinct difference between being arrested and being voluntarily released to aid an inquiry, warning against sensational reporting.

“It is important that members of the public and media practitioners distinguish between being arrested and being voluntarily handed over for investigation.

“The circumstances surrounding the four operatives should not be misrepresented or sensationalised before the conclusion of the police investigation,” he added.

Reaffirming the agency’s commitment to discipline and public trust, Abass stated that Amotekun does not tolerate conduct capable of undermining the state’s security architecture.
