IAWPA advocates joint security operations, intelligence sharing to eschew duplication, delay

A global peace organisation, the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA) Nigeria, in special consultative status with the United Nations ECOSOC, has called on all security agencies to institutionalise regular joint operations, intelligence sharing platforms, and unified command structures to eliminate duplication and improve response time.

After deliberating on the theme: “Policing for Peace: Building Synergy for a Safer Nigeria,” the group urged the federal, state and local governments to strengthen community policing structures, recruit more local personnel, and empower citizens as active partners in security through town hall engagements and neighborhood watch programmes.

A communique signed by Director, Strategic Development & Communications issued at the end of the IAWPA Nigeria national stakeholders security dialogue  “mandates IAWPA Nigeria to sustain advocacy, diplomacy, and strategic partnerships for peace education in schools, markets, and communities across the 36 states and FCT.”

The event organised to commemorate the United Nations 2026 International Day of the Police Cooperation, advocated  continuous training and retraining of security personnel on human rights, conflict de-escalation, professionalism, gender sensitivity, and modern policing techniques in line with international best practices.

The communique commended Nigerians and institutions for their contributions to peace building and national development, and endorses their investiture as “Eminent Peace Ambassadors” by IAWPA to inspire others.

While calling on the media “to promote peace narratives, factual reporting, and solutions journalism to counter misinformation, hate speech, and build public confidence in security institutions”, the communique resolved to mainstream youth and women into peace and security frameworks, including in decision-making and early warning systems at community levels.

The group recommended the “establishment of a National Security Stakeholders Forum, a quarterly platform convened by IAWPA in partnership with relevant MDAs to review security trends and coordinate responses.”

It urged “government to provide budgetary allocation and logistical support to community policing and vigilante groups operating within legal frameworks.”

On technology integration, it called on security agencies to invest in body cameras, digital crime reporting apps, and data centers to enhance transparency and efficiency.

“The National Orientation Agency, in collaboration with IAWPA and CSOs, should roll out nationwide campaigns on security consciousness, lawful conduct, and citizens’ duties.

“Immediate review of welfare packages, insurance, and psychological support for frontline security personnel to boost morale.

“IAWPA Nigeria should set up a Committee to track implementation of the resolutions and report progress at the 2027 commemoration,” the communique said.
