I Was Arrested & Detained In 2011 By The EFCC Over A Dispute Of What Happened In Washington -Ugwuonye

Barrister Emeka Ugwuonye has revealed that he was arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2011 over a dispute connected to an issue that happened in Washington.

In an interview on the KAATRUTH Podcast, on Wednesday July 8, 2026, Ugwuonye said his experience in EFCC custody exposed him to the challenges faced by many Nigerians who were arrested and detained by the agency.

He explained that while he was in detention, he met several people, including poor Nigerians, who he said were also arrested and treated unfairly. According to him, the situation made him question the level of fairness and legal protection available to ordinary citizens.

Ugwuonye said his time in detention changed his view of the justice system in Nigeria. He stated that many people were not properly protected by due process before being detained.

He said,

“I was arrested by EFCC in 2011. I was detained by the EFCC over a dispute of what happened in Washington. They detained me here. When I was held in EFCC detention, I met a lot of people, poor people arrested and harassed by EFCC. I was astonished to realize that in this country there was absolutely no due process of law…....
