The ongoing reconstruction of the Ikabigbo–Ekperi Road in Edo North senatorial district has raised fresh hopes among residents and road users, with many looking forward to improved transportation, easier access to markets and renewed economic activities upon the project’s completion.

Across the construction corridor, heavy equipment has moved into critical phases of work, with contractors executing reinforced concrete drainage, stone pitching, grading and road-base preparation, signalling steady progress on one of the area’s strategic road projects.

For communities along the Ikabigbo–Ekperi axis, the road is more than a transport link. It serves as a vital route for farmers, traders, students and commuters, connecting rural settlements with commercial centres within Edo North.

The ongoing work has, therefore, been welcomed as an important step towards improving mobility, reducing travel time and opening up economic opportunities for communities that depend on the corridor for their daily activities.

The promoter of the Edo-Nigeria’s Construction Site initiative, Mr. John Mayaki, described the project as another indication of Governor Monday Okpebholo’s determination to spread development across the three senatorial districts of the state.

According to him, the reconstruction of the Ikabigbo–Ekperi road demonstrated that the administration was paying attention not only to urban infrastructure but also to roads that directly support agriculture, commerce and rural livelihoods.

“The true value of infrastructure is measured by the opportunities it creates for ordinary people,” Mayaki said.

“When roads become motorable, farmers spend less transporting their produce, traders reach markets more easily, businesses expand and communities become better connected. That is why projects such as the Ikabigbo–Ekperi Road are economically significant.”

Mayaki noted that the engineering components already visible at the project site—including reinforced drainage channels, erosion-control measures and extensive road-base preparation—suggested that attention was being given to the long-term durability of the road.

“A good road is built from the foundation upward. Proper drainage and a stable base determine how long the infrastructure will serve the people. It is encouraging to see these critical elements receiving serious attention,” he said.

He said the project aligned with the vision behind the Edo: Nigeria’s Construction Site initiative, which seeks to highlight infrastructure projects that have a direct impact on communities across the state.

Mayaki expressed confidence that the completion of the road would strengthen economic activities in Edo North by improving connectivity, reducing transportation costs and making it easier for residents to access schools, healthcare facilities and markets.

He added that sustained investment in strategic road infrastructure would continue to play a vital role in driving inclusive development and improving the quality of life across Edo state.
