Hausa woman questions their marital custom requiring a bride to furnish her husband’s home

An Hausa woman, Ramlah Hukuma, has questioned the longstanding Hausa marital custom that requires a bride to furnish the whole home she and her husband will dwell in.
Ramlah, who acknowledged this in a Facebook submit on Wednesday, stated she will not take part within the custom.
“As a Hausa girl, one tradition in our marriage culture I honestly don’t understand is why a woman is expected to furnish the entire house she and her husband will live in, from kitchen appliances to mattresses, beddings and everything,” she wrote.
“The woman and her family are expected to provide everything for the house while the man only provides an empty apartment and some clothes for her to wear.
“Where precisely does the Quran make this a lady’s duty. Personally, I don’t see myself taking part on this custom. I can not think about my mother and father shopping for a mattress for a person so he can have someplace to sleep in his own residence.”
