Former Plateau Assembly Speaker Peter Azi dies

Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Peter Azi, has died at the age of 57.

The former lawmaker died on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, according to a family member who announced his death in Jos, the Plateau State capital.

Azi’s death has thrown his family, political associates, former colleagues and members of his community into mourning.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed by the family.

Family announces Azi’s death

A family member, John Azi, announced the former speaker’s death on Thursday, describing him as a son, brother and father whose passing was accepted as an act of God.

“With total submission to the will of God Almighty, the Azi Ajang family announces the passing unto glory of their son, brother, and father, Mr Peter Azi, the former Speaker of Plateau House of Assembly,” the family said.

The family added that the former speaker had “peacefully joined his creator.”

The announcement prompted condolences from political associates and others who worked with Azi during his years in public service.

While the family did not disclose the circumstances surrounding his death, it said details of his burial arrangements would be made public in due course.

Azi served as Plateau Assembly Speaker

Azi served as Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly between June 2015 and July 2018.

He became the presiding officer of the state legislature during the administration of former Governor Simon Lalong.

As Speaker, Azi occupied one of the most influential political positions in the state and presided over legislative activities involving government policies, budgets and other matters affecting Plateau State.

His tenure coincided with a period of significant political activity in the state, with the House playing a role in the consideration of legislation and oversight of the executive arm.

Azi later left the speakership in July 2018 but remained involved in Plateau State politics.

Political career and APC affiliation

The late former speaker was a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and remained active in the party’s political affairs after leaving the state legislature.

His political career developed through Plateau State’s political structure before he eventually rose to lead the state House of Assembly.
