NPC confirms death of chairman Aminu Yusuf

The National Population Commission (NPC) has announced the death of its Executive Chairman, Dr. Aminu Yusuf, at the age of 66.

A statement signed by the director, public affairs department of the commission, Mrs. Adelayo Serifat Olurode, and made available to journalists on Friday, disclosed that Yusuf died in Abuja after a brief illness.

According to the statement, Yusuf, who was sworn in as the eighth substantive chairman of the commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025, had provided visionary leadership and championed a seven-point agenda aimed at repositioning the commission.

The commission described his death as a significant loss to the nation, noting that he was “a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader” whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering.

Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger state, and had a distinguished record of public service spanning education, governance, grassroots politics and community development.

Before his appointment as NPC chairman, he served as executive chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area (LGA) and was a member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly.

He also served as a board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the governor of Niger state, among other positions.

Until his appointment as chairman of the NPC, Yusuf was the National President of the Niger State College of Education Alumni Association, Minna, and Co-Chairman of the Senator Abubakar Sani Bello Skill Acquisition and Development Committee.

The NPC said his leadership was marked by a strong commitment to strengthening the commission and ensuring that reliable demographic data remained central to national development planning.

“The Commission has lost a dedicated patriot, an astute administrator, and a compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the generation of reliable demographic data was unwavering,” the statement said.

The commission expressed condolences to President Tinubu, the Federal Government, the government and people of Niger state, as well as the Yusuf family, friends and associates.

It prayed that Almighty Allah would forgive Yusuf’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and give his family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Yusuf’s death comes at a time when accurate population and demographic data remain critical to government planning and the formulation of policies in areas including healthcare, education, employment, social protection and resource allocation.

The NPC is responsible for generating and coordinating demographic information required to support evidence-based planning and development across the country.

The Federal Commissioners, Director-General, management and staff of the commission mourned the late chairman and prayed for the repose of his soul.
