‘Impact,’ 24 Hrs After NOP NIGERIA’s Report, Gov Orders Emergency Fix On Collapsing Iwaro-Oka Road
“Power of just a 17-paragraph,” What Team Lead of NOP NIGERIA, Dr. Adeola Yusuf, said on feedback of impact on how just a few lines of reportage could be the cause of a positive action that would save lives
The Ondo State Government, South-West Nigeria, has moved swiftly to save a major community link, commencing immediate remedial works on the damaged portion of the Iwaro–Oka Road in Oka-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area, Nigeria.
The emergency intervention came barely 24 hours after NOP NIGERIA broke the story on Sunday evening, exposing the dangerous gully erosion that had virtually cut the road into two and threatened to isolate the community.
In a story headlined “Disaster Looming: Only Road Linking Abuja To Lagos In Oka On The Brink Of Collapse From Landslide,” published on Sunday, August 30, NOP NIGERIA highlighted how panic has gripped residents and youths of the sleepy town over how 100-meter gully is eating into the road.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has, 24 hours after the report, directed the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr. Abiola Olawoye, to take immediate action to prevent a total collapse of the critical route.
Engr. Olawoye visited the site on Monday for an on-the-spot assessment and immediately mobilised men and equipment for remedial works to stabilize the failing section of the road.
The swift government response has drawn widespread commendation from residents and stakeholders who had raised the alarm over the deteriorating condition of the road for over a year.
A legal luminary and indigene of the town, Barrister Jide Ologun, who confirmed the development to NOP NIGERIA, praised both the government and the media platform for acting promptly.
“You are too much! Work has started on Oka Road, as per feedback from Kabiyesi Oba Yusuf Adebori Adeleye, Paramount Ruler of Oka Kingdom,” Barrister Ologun said.
Reacting, the Team Lead of NOP NIGERIA, Dr. Adeola Yusuf, said that the organisation known for impact is humbled by this “feedback of impact,” which is at the core of all the report published by the development focused leading media group.

“We are humbled by this feedback of impact and, particularly, that a 17 paragraph report from NOP NIGERIA is the cause of a positive action that would save lives hitherto in danger on the road. That is the core of solution journalism we practice and we shall continue to strive to be the positive impact we want the world to be,” Adeola Yusuf said.
The Oke-Oka–Iwaro road is not just a local street. It serves as a vital link for residents, businesses, and the movement of goods within Oka-Akoko and surrounding communities.
Community leaders had warned that if nothing was done urgently, the 100-metre gully would completely sever the road, cutting off access to schools, hospitals, markets, and emergency services.
The Oka Youth Forum, which led a peaceful protest last week, also hailed the intervention, saying the government’s action has restored hope to the people.
“This is what responsive governance looks like,” a youth leader said. “We raised the alarm, and within 24 hours, government listened and acted. We appreciate Mr. Governor.”
Engineers on site said the remedial works will focus on filling the gully, reinforcing the road shoulders, and putting drainage measures in place to prevent further erosion during the rains.
The Commissioner assured residents that the intervention is the first phase, and that a more comprehensive rehabilitation of the entire Iwaro–Oka axis will be captured in the state’s infrastructure plan.
Traditional rulers in Oka Kingdom expressed gratitude to Governor Aiyedatiwa, noting that the road is crucial to the socio-economic life of the kingdom and to connectivity between northern and southern parts of Akoko land.
With work already underway, residents say the message is clear: when the media speaks and government listens, communities are saved. For now, Oka can breathe easier knowing its road — and its future — will not be cut in two.
