England captain Harry Kane has described a round of golf he played with Donald Trump 18 months ago as a “pretty surreal experience,” praising the President’s game.

Captain of England’s football team Harry Kane has broken his silence on what it was actually like to share a golf course with Donald Trump, calling the whole thing a “pretty surreal experience”. The round in question took place a year and a half ago in Florida, something Trump himself had already mentioned publicly before Kane spoke on it. Trump brought it up again this week while talking to reporters, offering nothing but praise for the England captain’s game. He described Kane as a great player, adding that he liked him a lot and rated his golfing skills highly.

Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup quarter-final against Norway on Saturday, the 32-year-old forward gave his own account of how the invitation came about. He explained that he was staying in Palm Beach when Trump asked him to come play, and he admitted his performance that day was decent without being anything special.

What stuck with him more was the novelty of the situation itself. Kane said that getting an invite from the President made for a strange but memorable moment, one where simply meeting Trump and teeing off alongside him felt unlike anything else. He also didn’t hold back on complimenting Trump’s game, noting that at 80 years old, Trump’s swing was genuinely impressive. Kane joked that he’d be happy to still be playing that well himself once he reaches that age, and said overall he was thankful for the invitation.

Beyond the golf talk, Kane also touched on a different kind of inspiration ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final. He said the squad wants to make Sir David Beckham proud, after the former England captain dropped in to speak with the team the day before their match against Norway.

Beckham’s visit came as Thomas Tuchel’s squad ramped up preparations to face Erling Haaland and Norway in Miami. Fittingly, the team held their Friday training session at the facilities belonging to Inter Miami, the MLS club that Beckham co-owns.
