Benue, Plateau Killings: Obi Urges Tinubu to Overhaul Security Response

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged the Federal Government to strengthen the nation’s security architecture following the latest deadly attacks in Benue and Plateau states.

Reacting to the recent killings in a statement issued on Monday, Obi described the incidents as painful and unacceptable, insisting that the protection of lives and property remains the foremost responsibility of any government.

He lamented that the attacks, which reportedly claimed at least 16 lives in Otukpo-Nobi community of Benue State and nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby, in Plateau State’s Riyom Local Government Area, underscored the country’s persistent security challenges.

According to Obi, communities across Benue, Plateau and other parts of Nigeria have continued to endure killings, displacement and destruction of livelihoods, warning against treating such tragedies as a normal occurrence.

He called on the Federal Government to adopt a proactive security strategy anchored on intelligence gathering, rapid response and accountability rather than reacting after attacks have occurred.

The former Anambra State governor also demanded the immediate identification, arrest and prosecution of those behind the attacks, stressing that the prevailing culture of impunity must come to an end.

Obi extended his condolences to the bereaved families as well as the governments and people of Benue and Plateau states, expressing hope that the affected communities would recover from the devastating attacks.

His remarks come amid renewed concerns over escalating insecurity in parts of the country and growing calls for more decisive measures to protect lives and communities.
