Arrest of Adeyemi’s father Cannot be Justified Under the Law –Femi Falana

Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has condemned the Nigeria Police Force for taking the father of Adeniyi Adeyemi, Director General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), to a station for questioning.

Speaking on Arise News Tuesday, Falana argued that the action violated constitutional provisions and the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.

He stressed that the reported arrest of the elderly man “cannot be justified under the Constitution, under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and under the Nigeria Police Act.”

Falana clarified that police officers later informed him the man was not formally arrested but invited to assist with investigations.

According to him, the father was asked to make a statement not under caution and was released alongside another family member after the process.

“If the police officers had wanted Mr. Adeyemi’s father to assist them, they should have taken his statement in his house and not in a police station. I do hope this will not repeat itself,” Falana said.

Residents reported that several police vehicles stormed the Adeyemi residence in Abuja, taking the father away after failing to locate his son.

A neighbour confirmed that the police copied contacts from the elderly man’s phone before releasing him.

Falana maintained that the police could have obtained the necessary information without subjecting the man to the stress of being taken into custody, warning against similar practices in future investigations.
