Amnesty International Nigeria has initiated an online petition urging Nigerians to demand accountability from Senator Francis Fadahunsi following his controversial comments ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

In a series of posts on its official X account on Friday, Amnesty described the remarks attributed to Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, as incitement to violence.

The organisation stressed that the petition seeks to ensure justice and protect the rights of Osun residents to vote freely without intimidation.

“Online petition to ensure that Sen. Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi face justice for inciting violence ahead of Osun election is ready! You can sign here,” Amnesty stated.

The group also called on the Nigeria Police Force and Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to conduct a prompt and impartial investigation into the senator’s comments.

The controversy stems from a viral video showing Fadahunsi addressing supporters in Ilesa, where his remarks in Yoruba were widely interpreted as a threat against Accord Party members.

Following backlash, the senator clarified through his media office that his statement was metaphorical, urging supporters to “kill Accord with votes, not violence.”

The Osun State Police Command subsequently invited Fadahunsi for questioning, describing his comments as potentially “threatening, inciting and intimidating.”

He honoured the invitation on August 11 and was interrogated for over two hours before being released.

Amnesty’s petition comes as Osun voters prepare to elect their governor on August 15, amid heightened political tension and concerns over electoral violence.
