Accord Party Urges EFCC Boss to Resign Over Osun Account Freeze

The Accord Party has praised President Bola Tinubu for ordering the unfreezing of Osun State Government’s bank accounts, while demanding the resignation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Accord’s National Chairman, Chief Maxwell Mgbudem, said Tinubu’s intervention was “timely” but insisted that Olukoyede’s leadership had eroded public trust in the anti-graft agency.

Mgbudem accused the EFCC of partisanship ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election, claiming the commission’s actions embarrassed the President and undermined Nigeria’s democratic image.

“Accord demands the immediate resignation of the EFCC chairman. If he fails to resign, President Tinubu should sack him to restore the integrity of the agency,” Mgbudem declared.

The party also urged security agencies, INEC, and other institutions to remain impartial during the election, warning against militarising the process.

Mgbudem called for the release of 60 detained Accord members to ease political tension and encouraged Osun residents to vote, stressing that “every vote must be counted.”

The EFCC had defended its decision to freeze the accounts, citing its legal authority to restrict accounts suspected of financial crimes for up to 72 hours without a court order.

Tinubu, however, directed the commission to vacate the freeze, noting that federal actions are often attributed to him whether or not he is aware of them.
