The Edo state government has attributed the slow pace of ongoing road rehabilitation and reconstruction across the state to persistent rainfall, while assuring residents that work would resume with greater speed once the weather improves.
Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, who stated this in a statement Tuesday
, said all major roads linking Edo state through its various entry points had been awarded for rehabilitation or reconstruction.
Afegbua said the government was aware of the concerns being expressed by motorists and residents over the condition of some of the roads, adding that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo remained committed to improving infrastructure and easing movement across the State.
He said the Benin-Ore Road, which is currently undergoing repairs, has suffered delays because of heavy rainfall, which has made it difficult for contractors to sustain construction activities.
”Similar challenges had affected the Benin-Agbor
Road, where reconstruction work was ongoing under a concession arrangement that would eventually produce a 10-lane highway,” he stated.
He also listed the Benin-Warri road among those affected by the persistent rains, noting that work had commenced on the major routes but that adverse weather conditions had slowed down progress.
He said the government, upon assumption of office, identified road infrastructure as one of its immediate priorities, following what he described as the abandonment of several roads by the previous administration.
