Abuja IPP, AKK pipeline project will strengthen Nigeria’s energy security

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment, Abdulazeez Abdulazeez, has inspected the Abuja Independent Power Plant (IPP) Phase 1A project, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to monitoring critical infrastructure projects and keeping Nigerians informed of progress under the current administration.

Leading an official oversight and public enlightenment delegation to the project site on Thursday, Abdulazeez described the inspection as part of a nationwide campaign to assess the implementation of key government projects and communicate their impact to the public.

Speaking during the visit, he said the Abuja IPP and the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project remains strategic national investments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s energy security.

Blueprint reports that when completed, the Abuja Independent Power Plant is expected to strengthen the national grid, improve electricity supply in the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states, and support the Federal Government’s broader agenda of expanding reliable power generation across the country.

“This whole issue of the AKK project, as well as the power plant itself, is very dear to the government, and that’s why we are here. It is a public enlightenment campaign to monitor progress on key projects and keep Nigerians informed,” he said.

The presidential aide highlighted that the strategic 1,600-megawatt capacity installation, which was entirely a plain grassland site as of mid-2024, has undergone a massive infrastructural transformation within a 24-Month construction window under the current administration.

He disclosed that active developmental focus is currently concentrated on the first scalability phase of 265 megawatts, which is projected to be fully commissioned and synchronized into the national electricity grid before the end of December 2026.

“This site, as of 2024, was all grass. But from mid-2024 to now, that is like basically two years, this is the wonder that has happened here under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“You can see that this facility, which is a 1,600-megawatt capacity power station, is very much in progress.

“Even though we are now concentrating on the first one, which is scalable, the first one is 265 megawatts, and this is expected to be commissioned and to be put into use by the end of this year, ” he said.

The Special Adviser revealed that the engineering facility will be entirely powered by natural gas supplied directly via the AKK pipeline infrastructure, describing the milestone as a revolutionary shift in Nigeria’s domestic electricity consumption landscape.

He also emphasized that while the entire Kano Electricity Distribution Company (Kano Disco), which covers three states, currently receives a total allocation of only 150 megawatts, the incoming phase of the Abuja IPP will inject an immediate 265 megawatts to stabilise industrial and residential demands.

Providing a detailed technical breakdown of the construction milestones on-site, the deputy site manager of the Chinese engineering firm handling the project Mr. Hu Saisai, disclosed that multi-phase operations officially commenced around June 2024 on the undeveloped terrain.

Hu Saisai attributed the steady progress to the consistent deployment of manpower, equipment and construction materials, assuring that engineering works are advancing in line with the implementation schedule.

He added that the project also includes key supporting infrastructure such as a natural gas receiving station, chemical water treatment plant, pumping house, mechanical draft cooling tower, block set backup generators and a 330kV switchyard.
