2027 polls: Experts urge journalists to extract commitment from politicians on plans for children

Experts and stakeholders in the health sector have tasked practicing journalists in Adamawa state and other parts of the country to leverage on the forthcoming  election, to amplify issues affecting children

They asked them to grill political office seekers on what they have in stock for children and their welfare if elected into various offices in 2027.

These were the issues that dominated conversation at a media dialogue on public finance for children, organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Bauchi field office with support from Bauchi State Government held  weekend in Yola for  journalists in the state.

Speaking at the workshop, Dr. Ambrose Fraima stressed the need for political office seekers  and those already in positions of authority  to prioritised  children issues in their agenda and plans for the people,  urging journalists to take advantage of the forthcoming election to interrogates politicians on their specific plans for children in all sectors if elected with the view to get specific commitments from them and hold them accountable if they failed.

He explained that public finance matters to children because they heavily depend on public services to  survive.

Also speaking,  another resource person, Dr.Benjamin Shido Ikwu, a lecturer of Economics and Development studies from Federal University kashere Gombe state, urged journalists to champion  the cause of making children issues a front banner in 2027 campaign activities.

He urged them to take on politicians on issues affecting children with the view to get their commitments, plans and strategies on how they intent to addressed these issues.

He further noted that journalists should focus on interrogative questions  so as to get comprehensive answers from politicians  such as how many out-of-school they intend to remove from streets back to classrooms? the time frame, the strategies they intent to apply to achieved this, the cost implications among other interrogative questions.

According to him, doing so  would make politicians and political office seekers to go beyond vaque promises and answers  to providing concrete, comprehensive and measurable answers and commitments on how they intent to addressed these issues affecting children in various sectors for which they can easily be judged and hold accountable.

On his part, UNICEF education specialist Bauchi field office, Abdulrahman Aminu Ado,  said that over the years, journalists have been more concerned with promises and figures given by politicians  than the releases and providing feed back.

  He  urged them to dig deep into such promises and commitments by politicians with the view to hold them accountable for their promises, actions and inactions
