Zamfara: Lawal appoints Aminu Atiku 21st Emir of Zurmi

The Zamfara state government Monday announced the appointment of Alhaji Aminu Atiku as the new Emir and Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi, bringing to an end the brief vacancy in the Zurmi Emirate Council following the death of the previous monarch.

In a press statement issued from the office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Gusau, Governor Dauda Lawal approved the appointment after due consultation and the recommendation of the Kingmakers of the Zurmi Emirate Council.

The SSG, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, said the appointment was made in accordance with established traditions, customs and relevant laws of the state.

Alhaji Aminu Atiku ascends the throne as the 21st Sarkin Zamfaran Zurmi.

He succeeds Alhaji Bello Suleiman, who passed away on August 31, 2026.

Until his appointment, the new emir held the traditional title of Dangaladiman Zurmi.

He is the eldest son of the 19th Emir of Zurmi, the late Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Alhaji Aminu Atiku has also served in public office as sole administrator of Zurmi local government council, a role that government officials say gave him direct experience of grassroots administration.

Governor Lawal congratulated the new monarch and urged him to uphold the legacy of his predecessors by providing leadership anchored on peace, justice, unity and the welfare of the people of Zurmi.

In the statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Suleman Ahmad Tudu, the governor described the Zurmi Emirate as one of Zamfara’s historic institutions.

Founded centuries ago by the Alibawa clan, the emirate, he said, occupies an important place in the history of the state with a heritage rooted in scholarship, justice and service to the people.

The governor charged the new emir to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities within the emirate.
