President Trump made his first appearance at the 2026 World Cup by attending the final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium, where he sat between First Lady Melania Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He was joined by a lineup of world leaders including Canada’s Mark Carney, Mexico’s Claudia Sheinbaum, and Spain’s King Felipe VI.

US President Donald Trump made his first appearance at the 2026 World Cup on Sunday, showing up for the biggest match of the tournament, the final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Despite the tournament running for weeks, this marked Trump’s first time actually attending a match in person. He chose to save his appearance for the championship game itself rather than any of the earlier rounds.

Trump wasn’t the only major political figure at MetLife Stadium. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum were also in attendance, meaning leaders from all three countries that co-hosted the tournament were present for the final, as per a report from USA Today.

Spain also had a strong presence in the stands. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and King Felipe VI both showed up to support their country’s team. One notable absence was Argentina’s President Javier Milei, who chose to skip the match. According to the report, Milei cited superstition as his reason for staying away.

During the playing of the national anthems, the publication reported that Trump was seen alongside a notable group, including First Lady Melania Trump, FIFA President Gianni Infantino, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and Rafael Louzán, president of Spain’s Football Federation.

Ahead of the game, when Trump was asked which team he was backing, Spain or Argentine, Trump replied by saying – “I won’t pick sides, I just think it’s very hard to bet against Messi.”
