Kiran Kaur, the mother of convicted killer Vickrum Digwa, has been sentenced to three years in prison for removing and concealing the knife used to murder 18-year-old Henry Nowak.

Kiran Kaur, the mother of convicted murderer Vickrum Digwa, has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of helping her son conceal the knife used to kill 18-year-old university student Henry Nowak.

Kaur, 53, of St Denys Road in Southampton, was convicted of assisting an offender following a trial at Southampton Crown Court. She was sentenced after a jury found that she removed the murder weapon from the scene and hid it in her family home.

Digwa was jailed for life in June with a minimum term of 21 years after fatally stabbing Nowak with a 21cm (8in) blade while the teenager was walking home from a night out in Southampton on December 3.

According to the prosecution, Digwa handed the knife to his mother after the killing. Kaur then took the weapon home, where it was placed among more than 20 ceremonial and other weapons in her son’s bedroom. Police recovered the knife seven days after the attack.

Sentencing Kaur, Judge William Mousley KC said that instead of encouraging her son to “do the right thing,” she chose to help him avoid being caught. The judge said hiding the knife among other weapons helped conceal its use in the murder.

While acknowledging that Kaur was unlikely to commit another offence and that her actions were motivated by an instinct to protect her son rather than personal gain, the judge said the seriousness of the offence required a custodial sentence to deter others from acting similarly.

Prosecutor Nicholas Lobbenberg described Kaur’s actions as “criminality of the highest order,” while defence barrister Mark Watson argued they were a spontaneous and instinctive attempt to protect her child.

Following the sentencing, the Crown Prosecution Service said anyone who helps murderers evade justice would be held accountable.

Henry Nowak’s family said they remained “incredibly disappointed” and vowed to continue their campaign for justice. They are also seeking answers over the police response after Nowak was handcuffed while dying at the scene. Hampshire Police has since apologised to the family, and two officers remain under investigation for potential gross misconduct.
