This decision came after the State Department expressed concerns about the appropriateness of the meeting amid rising tensions with Iran.

A planned meeting between a senior New York City official and Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations was cancelled after the US State Department intervened, according to US officials and media reports. Ana María Archila, commissioner of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Office of International Affairs, had been scheduled to meet Iran’s permanent representative to the UN, Amir-Saeid Iravani, on Tuesday, according to City Journal.

A US official familiar with the matter confirmed to Fox News Digital that the meeting had been scheduled.

According to City Journal, once the State Department became aware of the planned meeting, it was called off and State Department officials met representatives of the mayor’s administration to clarify what they described as appropriate conduct.

The Office of International Affairs works closely with the State Department on diplomatic matters because New York City hosts the United Nations.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Friday that the meeting had not taken place and would not go ahead. “That meeting did not take place, it will not take place and I did not know about it until there was a press inquiry regarding it,” he told reporters.

When asked whether he supported such a meeting, Mamdani replied: “I’ve said that that meeting will not be taking place. Thank you all very much.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a State Department official welcomed the decision to cancel the meeting. “We appreciate the mayor understanding the value of diplomacy, and for his decision to cancel this meeting,” the official said.

“It is unconscionable that a New York City official would even consider meeting with the Iranian Ambassador to the UN, a man who consistently works to undermine U.S. interests and whitewash his regime’s crimes against the United States, our allies, and Iran’s own citizens.”

The reported intervention comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly said he is “No. 1” on Iran’s “kill list”. The Wall Street Journal has also reported that Israel recently shared intelligence with Trump concerning an alleged Iranian assassination plot.

The proposed meeting would be the second reported instance in recent weeks in which the Trump administration intervened over contacts between the Mamdani administration and foreign leaders.

In June, The Washington Post reported that a planned meeting between Mr Mamdani and Colombian President Gustavo Petro was cancelled following objections from the State Department.

Archila previously served as co-director of New York’s Working Families Party before being appointed commissioner. She unsuccessfully ran for lieutenant governor of New York in 2022.

She attracted national attention in 2018 when she confronted then-Republican Senator Jeff Flake after he announced he would vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court. During the encounter, she identified herself as a survivor of sexual assault and questioned his decision following allegations made by Christine Blasey Ford, which Justice Kavanaugh denied.
