Tinubu Personally Called Adeleke After Ordering EFCC to Unfreeze Osun Accounts – Onanuga

President Bola Tinubu personally informed Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, of his directive to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to lift the restriction placed on the state’s bank accounts, according to the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga disclosed on Thursday that Tinubu conveyed the decision during a telephone conversation with the governor shortly after directing the anti-graft agency to vacate the restriction on the accounts.

The President had earlier ordered the EFCC to immediately withdraw its action against the Osun State Government’s accounts, noting that while the commission acted within its legal powers, the timing—just days before the August 15 governorship election—was inappropriate.

“It has come to my notice that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the accounts of the Osun State Government,” Tinubu said in a personally signed statement.

However, the EFCC maintained that it acted under the provisions of the EFCC Establishment Act and the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, rather than relying solely on a court order.

EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, explained that the restriction on the accounts was initially for 72 hours, after which the commission would seek a court order if further action became necessary.

The anti-graft agency said the decision followed an ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent handling of state funds, which began in March. According to the commission, investigators had questioned several officials, including the Accountant-General, and observed large transfers from government accounts to various corporate entities beginning August 2.

Reacting to the allegations, Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, dismissed the EFCC’s claims, describing them as an attempt to justify what he called an unlawful action through baseless accusations.
