Tinubu Hosts Outgoing ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday welcomed the outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, at the State House in Abuja.

Touray, accompanied by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, held a closed-door meeting with Tinubu.

While details of their discussions were not disclosed, the visit comes just weeks before Touray formally concludes his tenure as head of the regional bloc’s executive arm.

A seasoned Gambian diplomat, Touray assumed office on July 3, 2022, following his nomination by The Gambia and endorsement by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

His four-year term is set to end in 2026.Before leading ECOWAS, Touray served as The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and later as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Yahya Jammeh.

He was dismissed from that role in 2009 but went on to work with the Islamic Development Bank before returning to regional diplomacy.

Touray succeeded Ivorian diplomat Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who led the Commission from 2018 to 2022.

His departure marks a transition period for ECOWAS as the bloc continues to grapple with political, economic, and security challenges across West Africa.
