Substantiate alleged threat to life, Ohanaeze tells Peter Obi

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has challenged former Anambra state governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to provide credible evidence to support his claims of threats to his life ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group urged the federal government to ensure adequate security for Obi and every other presidential contender, adding that the safety of political actors remains a constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian state irrespective of party affiliation.

In a press statement issued Thursday and jointly signed by the Deputy President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the Deputy Secretary General, Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, the organisation described allegations bordering on threats to life as serious national security matters that must be backed by verifiable evidence and subjected to professional investigation.

Ohanaeze said while the safety of every Nigerian, particularly those actively involved in national politics, should never be taken lightly, public allegations capable of generating widespread concern must be handled with transparency and responsibility.

The organisation called on relevant security agencies to carry out a comprehensive, impartial and professional assessment of Obi’s allegations, urging the former governor to cooperate fully by providing every relevant detail that would assist investigators in establishing the facts.

The group said: “A democratic society cannot thrive where political actors operate under fear, uncertainty or threats to their personal safety. The security of presidential aspirants and major political stakeholders must remain a national priority beyond political differences.”

Ohanaeze further warned that unverified allegations could heighten political tension, fuel unnecessary suspicion and divert security agencies from addressing genuine threats confronting the country, adding that Nigeria’s current security challenges require vigilance and cooperation from all political leaders.

The organisation also advised Obi and other prominent politicians to adopt stronger personal security measures and avoid unnecessary exposure, noting that security consciousness is a mark of responsible leadership rather than a sign of fear.
