Strangers, observers, security operatives flood Osun state

Ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun state, the state capital has witnessed a massive influx of visitors and strangers from various parts of the country.

Investigations revealed that numerous individuals, many of whom were previously brought into the state during the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) registration exercise, have returned to participate in the weekend poll.

This surge in visitors has resulted in hotels across Osogbo being fully booked weeks ahead of the election, leaving arriving journalists and observers struggling to secure accommodation.

Security has also been visibly heightened across the state. Heavy security cordons are in place at strategic locations, with soldiers stationed at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters and mobile patrols moving across the state to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, the state has been flooded with various election observer groups monitoring and reporting on events.

However, findings indicated that some of these groups might have partisan leanings, with reports suggesting certain observers were allegedly hired or sponsored by political parties to shape a specific narrative.

Some observer groups were even reportedly observed making overtures to journalists in search of local alignment or sponsorship.

Away from the political friction, local businesses are reaping the economic benefits of the crowd.

Traders, particularly food vendors and canteens, have reported booming sales driven by the influx of visitors.

As the mandatory campaign blackout takes effect 24 hours before the poll, the All Progressives Congress (APC) held its mega rally in Osogbo, drawing a large crowd of supporters.

Despite the intense political atmosphere and concerns raised by stakeholders, residents have expressed strong resolve to exercise their civic duty.

Speaking to our Correspondent, citizens, including civil servants, vowed to turn out en masse to cast their ballots on Saturday.
