A devastating windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall in several communities in Kwara Local Government Area of Sokoto State has claimed four lives, injured many others, and severely affected numerous households.

Public infrastructure, including a primary school and a hospital, was also damaged by the windstorm on Saturday.

Following the disaster, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office, conducted an assessment of the affected communities to determine the extent of the destruction and identify the immediate humanitarian needs of the victims.

The windstorm affected Mallamawa, Mai Mushe, Kaura, Sabon Gari, Rungin Tsamiya, and other surrounding settlements, leaving hundreds of families displaced, with many homes suffering varying degrees of damage.

The assessment carried out by NEMA was aimed at establishing the level of destruction to facilitate timely emergency response and the provision of relief materials to affected communities. Several residents sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four fatalities were recorded.

According to NEMA, “It will continue to work with relevant state and local authorities to ensure appropriate humanitarian assistance reaches the victims as efforts continue to determine the full impact of the disaster.”
