Sick dad jailed for raping and murdering son's friend, 8, during sleepover

A man has been jailed for life after raping and murdering his son’s friend during a sleepover. The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his son, attacked eight-year-old Daniel Jamneck in Peerless Park North, a residential suburb of Cape Town in South Africa.

Daniel was sleeping on a double bed beside the 49-year-old father, while the man’s own son slept on a bunk bed in the same room. The attacker had pleaded not guilty to the offences but was convicted as a result of sickening forensic footage including bite marks, nail marks, adult pubic hair and cuts. The father was handed two life sentences for the rape and murder of Daniel at the Western Cape High Court on Wednesday.

He was further sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for the rape of a another woman and eight years’ imprisonment for the sexual assault of Daniel.

Speaking during the trial, Daniel’s mother, Maria Jamneck described Daniel as “our absolute light”, a compassionate little boy who loved nature, dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, and adored his younger sister.

She also spoke of the devastating trauma that continues to affect her family every day since Daniel’s murder.

Advocacy group Action Society, which supported Daniel’s family through the trial, welcomed the sentencing but said its work was not finished.

“Today’s sentence brings justice for Daniel and recognises the immense suffering endured by Maria, Caren and everyone whose lives have been shattered by this monster,” said Juanita du Preez, Action Society’s national spokesperson.

“Justice has finally been served. But we will continue our fight to expose the failures within the criminal justice system that allowed this accused to remain free and continue his crime spree, ultimately ending in Daniel’s death.”

Action Society said the accused had previously been convicted of rape, fled a court-mandated rehabilitation programme and later faced an attempted rape charge that was withdrawn — all before Daniel was raped and murdered.

The group said it would continue seeking accountability over the institutional failings that allowed those warning signs to be overlooked.
