Senate okays N403.1 billion Police Trust Fund budgets for 2025, 2026

The Senate Thursday June 9, 2026 approved a total sum of N403.1 billion Police Trust Fund budgets for 2025 and 2026, fiscal years, aimed at advancing fight against terrorism, kidnapping.

The breakdown shows approval of N170.1 billion for the Police Trust Fund’s 2025 fiscal year, as well as N 233 billion for the 2026 fiscal year.

According to the Senate, the Police trust fund would help strengthen policing and support the fight against terrorism, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country for two consecutive years.

The passage of the budgets were sequel to the presentation of the report of the Committee on Police Affairs of the 2025 and 2026 Budget Proposal of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund presented by the Committee’s Vice Chairman, Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo Central) on behalf of the chairman of the Committee, Senator Mallam Madori Abdulhamid (Jigawa East).

The approved 2026 budget covers personnel costs, capital projects and overhead expenditures aimed at enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.

For the 2026 budget, Capital Expenditure is N43,783,391,153.18; )NPTF Headquarters, Nigeria Police Force Headquarters is put at N179,108,751,811.30 with Sub Total of N222,892,142,964.47.

On Recurrent Expenditure, Personnel Cost NPTF is N1,857,751,175.70; Overhead Cost NPTF N9,213,699,870.00 with Sub Total of N11,071,451,046.70 and grand Total is N233,963,594,010.18.

Breakdown of the 2025 Police Fund shows Capital Expenditure as NPTF Headquarters at N27,289,294,129.50, Nigeria Police Force at N132,452,648,675.00 and Sub Total N159,741,942,804.50. Personnel Cost NPTF is N1,821,324,682.06, Overhead Cost NPTFis N8,540,220,054.00 and sub Total N10,361,544,736.06 while grand total is N170,103,487,540.56

According to the report, sources of funding will be 0.5% of Total revenue accrued to Federation Accounts; 0.5% of Total VAT N167.333.804.578.29; 0.05% of Net Profit of Companies in Nigeria N56,476,768,065.00; Aids, Grants, Donations etc N9,064,297,701.29, N5,000,000,000,00.

Senator Akintunde in his presentation of the report, said the Committee took cognizance of the statutory mandate of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund, which includes the procurement of operational vehicles and equipment, rehabilitation of police barracks and police stations, training and retraining of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, and other interventions aimed at enhancing internal security and the protection of lives and property across the country.

The Committee according to him, is of the firm view that the approval and effective implementation of the proposed budget will further strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force and contribute significantly to the maintenance of law and order, as well as the protection of lives and property across the Federation.

In his remarks after adoption of the reports, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio expressed optimism that the funding will improve the provision of critical equipment, infrastructure, training and other resources needed to bolster security operations and address the country’s growing security concerns.
