Rising Insecurity: UNIJOS Suspends Lectures, Summons Students To Emergency Meeting

The authorities of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have summoned all students to a crucial meeting over rising security concerns and recent incidents within and around the institution.

The university has also declared a lecture-free period to enable students attend the meeting slated for Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium by 9:00 a.m.

This was contained in an internal memorandum referenced UJ/VC/55, dated July 29, 2026, and signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya. According to the memorandum, the meeting became necessary following developments that threaten the peace, security and reputation of the university.

“In view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our University, I have approved the convening of a crucial meeting with all students of the University of Jos,” the Vice-Chancellor stated.

Prof. Ishaya said the meeting would address general security concerns within the university community, recent unhealthy activities involving students and measures required to protect the welfare of all members of the institution.

“The primary objective of this meeting is to deliberate on general security concerns within the University community, recent unhealthy activities of students and to chart a collective course of action to safeguard the well-being of all members of the University community,” the memo added.

To ensure full participation, the Vice-Chancellor directed all deans of faculties and heads of departments to suspend lectures between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Friday.

“Considering the significance of the meeting, all Deans of Faculties and Heads of Departments are by this notice directed to declare a lecture-free period between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on the said date. “This will ensure that all students attend and participate in the meeting,” the directive stated.

The university stressed that attendance at the meeting was compulsory for all students. The development comes amid heightened security concerns within the university community. About two weeks ago, panic swept through the institution after the body of a farmer was discovered on a farmland within the university’s Permanent Site.

The university management confirmed that the deceased was neither a student nor a staff member but a farmer known to operate in the area. Security agencies subsequently commenced investigations into the incident.

The latest directive also follows the alleged mob killing of Ibrahim Mbaya, a student and Jos-based model, who reportedly died after he was attacked by youths over allegations of stealing a mobile phone at an off-campus residence.

The incident triggered public outrage, with the Plateau State Police Command arresting suspects and launching an investigation into the matter.
