Rep. Agbese Opposes Frequent Change of Service Chiefs, Calls for Nigeria’s Exit from ICC

Philip Agbese, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency of Benue State, has cautioned against the constant replacement of Nigeria’s service chiefs, warning that such moves disrupt military operations and embolden terrorists.

Speaking on TVC News, Agbese argued that the Armed Forces have achieved notable successes in tackling insecurity and deserve consistent support rather than recurring calls for leadership changes.

He stressed that new commanders often need time to settle into office, during which insurgents exploit the gap to regroup and launch fresh attacks.

The lawmaker urged opposition parties to avoid politicising national security, noting that the military belongs to all Nigerians.

He commended citizens for countering misinformation about military operations online and revealed that over 1,000 people had been rescued from captivity this year.Agbese also advocated stronger international collaboration in intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism.

However, he called for Nigeria’s withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), arguing that membership no longer aligns with the country’s security realities.

He maintained that Nigeria’s judicial system is capable of handling cases of human rights violations and warned that ICC jurisdiction could expose troops to unnecessary international prosecution.

Drawing comparisons with countries like the United States, Russia, and China, Agbese urged Nigeria to empower its Armed Forces to respond decisively to threats while reviewing international commitments that may hinder effective military operations.
